All About IPL Laser Treatments

IPL laser treatment stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and is a type of technology used in both the cosmetic and medical industries to treat the skin for either aesthetic or therapeutic purposes. Here at Beauty by Ruth Ltd, we offer IPL treatment at our Olney House of Beauty, a stone’s throw away from Northampton.

The Purpose of IPL Treatment

First designed to treat vascular conditions, relating to the arteries, veins, and the general circulatory systems of the body, IPL treatment now has many other purposes. It can be used to carry out hair removal, skin rejuvenation, to treat acne, as age defence and treatment of thread veins. The technology is particularly useful for treating acne, so you can enjoy clearer looking skin. When it comes to hair removal, it works to reduce the appearance of the hairs, so with time they seem lighter and thinner.

Treatment Areas

The most common areas for IPL treatment for hair removal include the upper lip hairs, chin, back and legs. It may be used on other areas of the body and face, and you will be able to discuss your needs with our fully trained and certified therapists. You will be fully assessed on initial consultation to see whether you are a suitable candidate for IPL treatment.

How IPL Treatment Works

As the name suggests, the treatment works by pulsating an energy-rich white light on the skin. The light produces energy when it meets the surface of the skin as the energy is converted when it interacts with pigments in the skin. A combination of the IPL and radio frequency (RF) current is used as part of the treatment, meaning that it is possible to also treat darker skin, as well as those with light coloured and/or fine hairs. You will feel the short bursts of light as a slight tingling or prickling sensation. It is much less painful than alternative methods of hair removal, and the cooled applicator helps to reduce any discomfort you may experience. We are able to treat a small area as a test patch to see how you respond to the treatment.

The Number of Required Treatments

The amount of treatment you need to achieve your desired results will depends on your specific areas of treatment. For longer lasting results of hair removal, you can expect to have around 6 to 8 treatment sessions between intervals of 4 to 8 weeks. This is due to the fact that just 25-30% of the body’s hairs grow at any given moment, and hairs can only be removed when they are in this growth stage. For other purposes, you can benefit from shorter treatment times. For example, light pigment disorder can show results after 2-3 treatments, and acne may only take between 4-6 sessions (carried out every fortnight).
